Today is reveal day for my Facebook Art Quilt Group Art Quilts Around The World. Two months go fast and this theme is called "The Eyes Have It" which is to me eyes in a portrait quilt but could be eyes of anything or "I." Lots of choices to play with. I put eyes in all my quilts (my favorite part of a portrait quilt!) and had all my 3-4 years worth of projects from this group in front of me recently and discovered I never use yellow in any of these projects. This became my color choice as well as my desire to have a woman of color as the featured portrait.
I found a cool tribal makeup on Pinterest and was inspired by it for my African woman. I also found the tribal looking fabric for the background in my stash and thought it worked well. I used my favorite go to skin tone gradation fabrics from Cherrywood Fabrics because they are so lovely to work with and the gradation of values takes the work out of selecting fabrics. I used a white and black variegated thread for the hair and hand tacked black bouche yarn to the surface to give a nice Afro texture. I ran the fuzzy ends off the edges. I am titling this quilt "Mariama" after my ex MIL who lives is Gambia West Africa. I never met her but thought she had a pretty name.
