International Quilt Association Silent Auction Donation Quilt: Black Light

I am teaching again this November at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. They invited me to contribute to the International Quilt Association Celebrity Mini Quilt Silent Auction. I am delighted they asked me and enjoy seeing my work in the line-up with all the other teachers, award winning quilters and IQA board members.

The above photo is my inspiration for this quilt. It is the cover of the August sale flyer for an area beauty supply store and I thought it was awesome and worthy of a portrait quilt idea. There is a new color line in which the colors are very vivid under a black light. The color line is called Neon Electric by Pulp Riot. I really liked the purple-like skin tones and the bright brows, lips, hair and eye shadow contrasting greatly. And I liked the fakeness of green eye brows and the funky hair colors. As I was working in the colors they reminded me of the colors in the basic package of Lifesaver candy I used to eat as a child!!

I used this face pattern again to design this project. I changed the hair, clothes and eye shadow to be more winged in shape. I think it looks a lot different just changing up the colors.

This is a close up of the face. I purchases some fabric glow in the dark paint in four colors and brush stroked the paint in the matching colors. In the dark it wasn't terribly affective but oh well. For embellishments I stayed very simply because I thought the colorful fabrics were enough. I glued dark purple rhinestones to the ear lobes for earrings and a small purple rhinestone for a nose piercing. And last, a small bit of glitter poster paint on the mouth. I chose the size of 20" square just like the Cherrywood challenges because I like the size. Ta da! She is done. I am also in the middle of making a similar more complete version of this black light glow in the dark idea for myself which I will post when it is complete.
