WI Quilt Expo's Bake Off Challenge: Cupcake Betty

The Wisconsin Quilt Expo is held in early September in Madison and they have been having a special challenge at their quilt expo and the theme for 2018 is called Bake Off. I immediately thought of a pin up girl in the kitchen when I designed this quilt. The only rule was the size of 30" wide by 40" long which is typically larger than I work. The pin up girl is wearing a sexy ruffly apron and holding a cupcake. I added baking utensils to the sides of the project to get the 30" width. I added a wide bottom area with mirror images of a Mix Master, oven mitts and measuring spoons. This project began with a purchase from www.craftsy.com where I purchased a variety of fabrics with a baking theme. I used a print with baking words in the apron, sash and bow. I added a red and white trim near the bottom edge.. The fingernails received red glitter nail polish.

In the face detail the use of glitter nail polish is used in the hair and brow bones. Chunky turquoise glitter is applied to the eye lids. A red flower from a dollar store Hawaiian lei with a cute donut button from Joann Fabrics in the center adds pin up vintage flair!. I sewed donut buttons to the four corners of the quilt as well. I used a vintage earring of my Mother's for Betty's earring.

The cupcake has lots of detail and bugle beans sewn to it to represent sprinkles!!

I thought Betty needed a tattoo and since I am gluten free and don't actually bake anything anymore I used a Pigma Micron blue pen with a traditional tattoo font and added the words "Bake Gluten Free!" I had to have a bit of humor.

The bottom portion of the quilt has two red Mix Masters with polka dots bowls, two oven mitts and measuring spoons. I added the metallic red rick rack because I thought it needed something and rick rack has a retro vibe often used as trim on old aprons. June 30, 2018 is the deadline for the contest and I have had this quilt finished for a month waiting for the deadline so I could share it. I believe I need to wait a few weeks to find out if Cupcake Betty is included in the challenge. All accepted quilts will travel for 2 years to various quilt venue across the United States.

Portrait Quilt for Appleton East H.S. Class Reunion Door Prize

I have a class reunion this July in Appleton WI. I went to Appleton East H.S. and our school colors were blue and red because we were the Patriots. Back then the Americana color combination was not easy to come by but today it's everywhere. Anyway, the reunion is having door prizes and the coordinators are asking us to donate something so here is my contribution. I used my school colors and all fabrics in my stash. The batik stars and stripes is totally a great fabric as well the batik I used for the halter top!! I have used this pattern of mine before but have not added a border before. I also went into the border with the hair while doing the quilting.

I embellished with rhinestones for earrings and a necklace, two different nail polishes for the hair, a red glitter nail polish on the lips and a great blue chunky glitter nail polish for the eye shadow. I found a cute little button for the jeans closure.
The quilt is 18" x 24."

I added the year of my graduation to the bottom of the quilt in a subtle way. I wanted some reference to the reunion but not too much. You can do the math to figure out how old I am!

And last I never show my labels but I wanted to show this one. I do all my labels using the face stamp I picked up at Joann Fabrics and then I emphasize the eyes and lips using my Pigma Micron pens. I use them to write the info for the labels too.
I hope who ever gets my quilt enjoys it!!
