Art Quilts Around The World Challenge: Bugs (Bee Hive)

Today is reveal day for my Facebook art quilt group Art Quilts Around The World. The theme is BUGS and I chose bees as my bug of choice for two reasons. First, I have a refrigerator magnet with a woman wearing a bee hive hairstyle with bees swarming around her head and, second, I remembered a 2008 movie based on the book The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. The story is about 3 black women who are sisters in the 1960s who live on a farm and are bee keepers. They run a honey business and their honey is called Black Madonna. Black Madonna represents fertility and motherhood. A white female teenage runaway finds her way to their farm and they take her in. The actresses Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys are in this movie-check it out!! I love this movie and because of this the woman is my quilt is black. I Googled to make sure bees are bugs. They are part of the same family of wasps and ants and are know for their pollination abilities. I chose to take the bee hive idea literal. I found it was easy to find bee themed fabrics and buttons to complete this project.

This is a close up photo of the eye area. I added a few rhinestones because I couldn’t help myself! There are two sizes of bee buttons that form the swarm!

My quilter friend found this fantastic iron-on beauty full of bling to complete the quilt. I added a subtle yellow glitter in the center of the bee hive but felt the quilt had enough activity already. I finished early for the deadline and I have it hung on the wall at the hair salon I work at. A customer wants to buy this quilt and if she accepts my price it’s a go!
